LEED Module 3: Materials, Procurement and Documentation

Batch 1 of LEED Materials, Procurement and Supplier Documentation brought construction and procurement professionals together at Prodesign Learning Centre for a practical look at how material decisions become clear, traceable project records.

The module connects LEED requirements with the day-to-day work of procurement teams, contractors, suppliers and document controllers. Participants explored how to identify documentation requirements early, follow up with suppliers and maintain records that remain useful throughout project review.

From Procurement Requirements to Usable Evidence

Effective material compliance begins before an order is placed. Project teams need to understand which requirements apply, communicate them clearly to suppliers and confirm that the submitted evidence relates to the exact product being proposed.

The training focused on a practical workflow:

• Identify applicable material and product requirements before procurement
• Request the correct declarations, certificates and supporting documents
• Check that submissions clearly identify the manufacturer and product
• Record review status, comments and outstanding information
• Follow up with suppliers before materials arrive on site
• Maintain a material register that supports reporting and certification review

Lessons That Extend Beyond LEED

A structured procurement process is valuable even when a project is not pursuing LEED certification. Clear requirements, consistent follow-up and reliable tracking reduce missing information, make approvals easier to audit and give the wider project team better visibility of procurement progress.

This connection was reflected directly in the Batch 1 evaluation feedback. Participants highlighted both the LEED knowledge gained and the wider value of applying the same disciplined process on other construction projects.
